Art Therapy Services
I specialize in creative arts therapy/psychotherapy with children, adolescents and adults around the areas of trauma, grief & loss, depression, behavioral disturbances, medical illness, stress management, and adjustment and acculturation issues. I am also trained and certified as a Child Life Specialist (CCLS) to help children around specific issues of trauma, loss and grieving related to medical illness and/or death. I use a variety of techniques in therapy, trying to find what will work best for my clients. My approach is client-centered, drawing from various theoretical orientations, with emphasis on the relational model of psychotherapy, humanistic theory, and trauma and attachment theory.
I am currently available for in-home art therapy services, private consultation, supervision, presentations and workshops. I am also Spanish-speaking.
About Art Therapy
Art therapy is based on the idea that the creative process is healing and life enhancing. It utilizes the creative process, existing within every individual, to promote growth, self-expression, emotional healing, conflict resolution and transformation. It involves using a wide variety of materials, from pastels to paint, to create a visual representation of thoughts, feelings, and ideas, which can then be explored in a supportive environment.
According to the American Art Therapy Association (2009):
Art therapy is the therapeutic use of art making, within a professional relationship, by people who experience illness, trauma or challenges in living, and by people who seek personal development. Through creating art and reflecting on the art products and processes, people can increase awareness of self and others cope with symptoms, stress and traumatic experiences; enhance cognitive abilities; and enjoy the life-affirming pleasures of making art.
